Why is it that there is never the time to sit and write? Or am I just not making the time? Well, we have been busy since the end of the season in 2011 with many things so I’m going to use that as my excuse for not getting to this sooner…..

So a reasonable start should be Happy New Year to all who read this! And we hope that you all had a great holiday time. Ours was spent sorting out our new home here in the US — we moved from New York to Florida, had loads of visitors, and are just now starting to get to know our new surroundings. All just in time to get ready for the new season on board Meanderer and the beautiful canals of France. We are anticipating a great season again this year.

Our fantastic chef and his wonderful wife are coming back. Sylvain will continue to amaze our guests with his fantastic light touch to some traditional French cuisine and we’ll see if we can find even more interesting wines to have on board in addition to those we already enjoy. That’s always fun for me! Interesting how pretty much all French people know and understand wines and cheese like no-one else. You can have heated discussions about cheese vendors and whether they understand the cheeses that they sell or not!!! Quite amusing really! And of course everyone knows all the vendors in the region…….Something about village life and rural surroundings. Topics are always food, wine and the weather!
Kate, Sylvain’s wife, will continue to be the best hostess on the canals of France!!!! Her quiet wit and amazing attention to detail make life on board Meanderer an exceptional experience. We are so lucky to have her. We always get comments that she is never seen doing all the things that make Meanderer so special — she magically moves around the boat taking care of everyone.

So, as a precursor to the new season, which will begin before we know it, I thought I’d go through some of the hundreds of photos that I take and share some of them with you. No particular theme other than moments on the canal and places we visit………
(Click on the photos to enlarge for better viewing)
We see so many spectacular sunsets so here are a few for you to enjoy

I always talk about hidden gems when we have guests on board. Our region is “the road less travelled” which is wonderful because most of the time we have the place to ourselves when we go visiting. We are not fighting the crowds. One day I was walking in Montargis and took a different street than I typically do and 50 yards from the magnificent church (which we visit with our guests all the time) I came across an oddity! An old balcony stuck on the side of a building. It’s quite beautiful with gorgeous wood carvings and exquisite details. Where did it come from? I went to the tourist office to ask….. Apparently it came from a village not too far away and the building was about to be torn down. So the town of Montargis decided to rescue the balcony. It dates from the 16C I’m told but other than that there doesn’t seem to be much known about it!

I’m often asked — “don’t you get bored cruising the same route all the time?” “NO!!!” is always my emphatic answer. The countryside is so beautiful and changing all the time. The fields change, the canal changes, the trees and plants change…..

When I went back this winter there had been work going on in the canals. There is a long stretch that we cruise and the canal breached!!!! Work is going on as I write and it all should be prepared ready for the start of the season but it’s interesting viewing. First of all, there’s the empty canal!! It really isn’t very deep so when I tell you that if we were to breach our hull you’d never know it — it’s true! We’d simply sit on the bottom and watch the water flow past us!!! Look at the photos below though — hopefully you can see the river of mud that fell on the downside of the bank — and at the end — a stand of snowdrops peeking through early — a surprise in the mess.

As the seasons change so do our views of course. The end of the season is Fall and we can get some frosty, misty mornings. It can be a challenge for George to pilot when it’s like that but it can make for some wonderful sights….

And then there’s winter…..and that’s why we don’t cruise in winter!!! Still beautiful though.
Spiders!!! They are the bane of my life on the boat, spinning their webs where they are not welcome! But, oh so beautiful when they are draped on grasses, shrubs, and lock gates, dripping with crystals of dew…

There’s no doubt that wines are a big part of the experience in France. The harvest happened about a month early this year thanks to the dry and hot spring. Early word is that it will be a good quality harvest (at least in Sancerre where we do our main visits).
(Click on the photos to enlarge)

It’s always fun to be able to see the grapes being brought in. The vineyards are crawling with the pickers, the tiny roads are full of tractors pulling trailers laden with grapes bursting with juice…and the winery is in full swing. Amazing that the harvest takes such a short time – normally 2-3 weeks and then the process of wine-making begins in earnest.

The winery that we visit for our tour and tasting is Domaine Henri Bourgeois. They are one of the top producers of Sancerre wines and do a fantastic tour and tasting. Ten generations have gone into making this the winery what it is today. They have an unusual set-up using only gravity to move the grapes, juice, and finally wines into the bottles.

The sauvignon blanc grape is particularly sensitive to handling so by using gravity they are able to maximize the qualities of the grapes. They pick only by hand too – back-breaking work! The best vines are on a hill known as Le Mont Damné. Full southern exposure and a steep incline — too steep for any machinery at all — this is where the original vines were planted, believed to be as early as Roman times…. The Bourgeois family has vines on this hill that are about 70-80 years old.

Total area of the apellation of Sancerre is about 2000 hectares (about 4000 acres). The family has about 70 hectares throughout Sancerre on each of the three soil types: Kimmerigian Marl which is full of little sea-creature fossils, flinty soil and chalky clay. Each soil type imparts a special quality and taste to the wine. Many wine-makers blend grapes from the soils but Henri Bourgeois has always kept them separate to be able to produce many different wines under the appellation of Sancerre.
Two types of grape only can be used to make a wine that can be called Sancerre — sauvignon blanc for the white and pinot noir for the reds and rosés.

About 80% of wine production in Sancerre is white and 20% red and rosé . The Bourgeois family does make a late harvest wine if conditions are good — apparently this year it will be! Delicious, syrupy and golden it’s fantastic with foie gras, blue cheese (think Roquefort) and desserts….
Ever wondered what happens to the skins and junk that is left? By law, the wineries must GIVE 20% to alcohol makers. That can be in the pharmaceutical industry, cognac making industry or it can used to make a distillate called Marc. Amazing stuff, Marc — makes grappa seem wimpy!!! 46% proof — not for the faint-hearted…. the rest of the left-over junk is generally used as fertilizer.

Ten generations would create some history you would imagine! You’d be right — in the historical part of the winery is a collection of old bottles of wine dating from as early as 1934!!! I’ve been lucky enough to taste wine as old as 1984 — it was delicious. Many people don’t realize that some white wines can actually age for quite a long time and the Sancerre wines are one of those.

Another more recent piece of history is some special oak barrels that were made from an oak tree that was, sadly, hit by lightening. It was found to be 435 years old and was auctioned off. The Bourgeois family won the tree and had barrels made and produced three vintages of red and white wines made from their best vines. Fabulous wines. They are known as Chene St Etienne……..

Of course we have many other wines on board other than Sancerre wines but this is such a great winery I thought I’d share it with you.
I’ll save the other wines until another blog…….

It’s July already and we are cruising of course. All my good intentions of writing a blog early somehow vanished…. Hopefully you agree with “better late than never”.
Spring here has been remarkable. We have had the warmest and driest since we began our adventure here. We’ve been able to completely repaint Meanderer from top to bottom — at least anything that’s above the water line. She looks spectacular.
(Click on the photos to enlarge -they look better that way!)

We also made two major visible investments this year — a new minibus and new chairs for the deck. The minibus is a VW Caravelle and is so comfortable with three rows of a/c so no-one sweats it out in the back! It also has an automatic passenger door so no more struggling to pull it shut. We’re happy with it and hopefully our guests are.

The chairs are fantastic — from upright to almost fully reclining simply by leaning back or sitting up! Plenty of lazing on deck in those….

Other major improvements, that are not as visible, happened over the winter and are more to do with the running of the boat — new back-up batteries for example and other mechanical things that I don’t understand!!!!! All designed to make each trip seamless for everyone. Thank you Captain George! (AKA Hubby!!!!)

Our crew is in place and we’ve received accolades again for our chef. Sylvain and his wife, Kate (who worked with us before) are a wonderful team on board. Add in our wonderful hostess Yasmin (who worked with us last year) and all is gelling wonderfully. It’s already a great season…..
I know I always seem to talk about food but honestly it’s such a huge part of the experience on board, and in France in general. Here are some more photos of the delicious dishes that Sylvain has been preparing….

It’s hard to say which, of all the visits that we offer, is my favorite but I think that the gorgeous Château of La Bussière ranks right up there. I’m not sure whether it is the château itself or the incredible potager (fruit and vegetable garden) which dates from the 18th century. The château was built originally in the 12th century as a true château-fort (stronghold or fortress). The main house, in its present incarnation, was rebuilt in the 17th century having suffered being besieged and partial destruction during the religious wars.
As you enter the courtyard of the château itself you pass through the original 12th century tower – impressive. It sits out on its own little peninsula in the middle of a 15-acre lake. The original moat can be seen but it no longer contains water. When the château was first built it needed a deep moat and drawbridges to protect it because it was on the original “silk road” from Lyons to Paris. This road is now N7 -a major national road that we drive on all the time!

During the time of Louis XIV the estate was raised to the rank of marquisate and the owner, Jean Baptiste Du Tillet, decided to upgrade the look of his estate by engaging the famous André Le Nôtre, landscape architect. Le Nôtre (who did the gardens at Versailles) redid the gardens at La Bussiere and his designs remain to this day.
During the revolution Du Tillet emigrated to the UK and the château was sold to Count de Chasseval, the current owner’s ancestor. Countess de Chasseval still lives at the château, although not in the castle itself, but in an apartment set up in one of the buildings surrounding it known as the farm buildings.

We are often lucky enough to see the Countess and have a conversation about La Bussière and its famous gardens. Sometimes she will be working in the gardens and is more than happy to talk about the amazing flowers and fruits and vegetables that grow there.

For me the best part about the visit are the gardens and grounds. Depending upon the time of year, the potager is positively groaning with an abundance of produce. The flowers are breathtaking……….there is always an astounding array of species and colors……
There are extraordinary examples of espaliers (trained fruit trees) — clearly 100′s of years old. These are varieties of apples and pears – I have no idea how many different kinds. There is an alley of quince trees. I had no idea what they were until I asked – - they look like huge pears. There is every type of vegetable you could think of, berries dripping off the bushes, tomato varieties that make you drool, an arbor of squash looking like colored lanterns…….it goes on and on. Amazing!
I am often asked, and in fact asked the same question myself, why are we not allowed to pick the fruit and veggies – especially since it does drop on the ground and there is no way that it can all be consumed by the Countess, her family and the staff! The answer I was given, which seems reasonable, is that the appeal of the gardens is all that is there and if it was stripped there would be nothing to look at….However — last season the Countess planted a huge area of the potager with raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants and red currants which we were allowed to pick! Hooray!!!!!

I went there several times with guests and we picked berries. We pay for the berries and all proceeds go to the upkeep of the gardens. You cannot imagine how good these berries were — huge, perfect, fragrant, delicious. We picked kilos and kilos of them and chef made delicious tarts and ice-creams, we ate them fresh and I made copious amounts of jams. Yum, yum, yum!!! I’m looking forward to doing the same thing this year.
Of course the inside of the château deserves some page space! It’s sad to see the evident struggles to preserve such a heritage. Only the basement and first floor are available for visiting but it’s beautiful nonetheless. The Countess receives no help from the government other than tax relief on the cost of running the business part of the estate. I’m often asked why there are not foundations to help preserve treasures like La Bussière. There are simply too many places like this in France!!! It’s just not feasible. Sad but that’s the way it is…

When we finish a season there is always time to reflect on how it went, how we did and so on. This time I started to wonder about how often we do certain things. So……………………..here are some fun facts and figures for you.

This year we cruised for a total of 16 weeks. We cleared about a total of 464 locks (and that’s just the weeks that we cruised with guests -it’s quite a lot more if you factor in the moving of the boat between cruises!). The deepest lock is over 5 meters and the smallest less than 2 meters.
(click on any of the photos to enlarge)

We had 80 guests on board — the youngest was 5 and the oldest was 87!!!! Meanderer is truly a barge for all ages…..the French canals offer all kinds of attractions and although it may not seem the right kind of vacation for young people you’d be surprised at what we can find to do outside of our “normal” routines.

We prepared 96 breakfasts and dinners and 80 lunches!! A lot of shopping went into doing that — not to mention hours in the kitchen by our amazing chef.

Thinking about meals I estimate that we consumed about 750 croissants and pastries and over 450 breads of varying kinds!!

We opened approximately 60 bottles of champagne and 624 bottles of wine!!!!!!!!!! We also consumed about 650 large bottles of water, countless small bottles of water and cans of sodas…..

And then there’s the cleaning………we did approximately 900 loads of laundry and drying -and that does not take into account the laundry that we send out!!!!!!!!!!

The dishwasher ran about 560 times, washing a total of about 3000 glasses!!!!!!!!! Which means that we polished about 3000 glasses too! and then the plates, silverware, serving dishes…you get the picture.

We crossed the famous Pont Canal de Briare about 35 times. For a long time it was the longest such aqueduct in the world measuring 662 meters. That is always one of the highlights for our guests. Cruising over the Loire river — pretty amazing and so beautiful. The views are spectacular.

Now some random things:
I picked kilos and kilos of raspberries this year at the Chateau of la Bussiere (my next blog will be on the Chateau so visit back soon) and made jars and jars of jam! Chef made all kinds of spectacular dishes and ice-creams and sorbets featuring raspberries. Yum!

We visited Fontainebleau, Vaux le Vicomte, Samois-sur-Seine, Nemours, Moret-sur-Loing, Grez-sur-Loing, Ferrieres-en-Gatinais, Chateau Landon, Montargis, Montbouy, Chatillon Coligny, Gien, La Bussiere, St Fargeau, Guedelon, Briare, Sancerre, Chatillon-sur-Loire and probably other places I’ve forgotten!

Our guests went walking, biking (watched the Tour de France!), chocolate tasting, market visiting, horse-back riding, ballooning, picnicking, fruit-picking. Many enjoyed the on-board jacuzzi too.

So there you have it -it’s fun to “analyze” what we do. I’ll see what else I can come up with………….

Time, I thought, to write a blog in a little more depth about one of our treasures here in the region — the Arboretum National Des Barres. Located in Nogent-Sur-Vernisson it is one of the listed places in France to visit. It’s an amazing place. Over 2,500 species of trees with some hundreds of years old. I went for a visit with my sister one day -we spent hours there and still could have stayed longer enjoying it.
It’s situated on 35 hectares of land (a hectare is about 2 acres) so you can imagine how much space there is to walk around. It is home to a collection of species from all over the world and is considered one of the most important collections of trees and shrubs in all of Europe. Botanists come from all over to study there.
The Arboretum was started by Philippe Andre de Vilmorin. Originally purchased in 1821 the estate was 283 hectares. The De Vilmorin family were avid horticulturalists with Philippe being interested in forestry. He planted the extensive forest of mostly oaks and pines. Over the years specimens have been sent from all over the world and the Arboretum was opened to the public in 1984. The French Ministry of culture declared it a “Jardin Remarquable” in 2003 and I can tell you that it is a remarkable garden!!!
Different times of the year will provide different wonderful things to see. The day my sister and I were there it was the end of the azaleas but they were still gorgeous. The trees were looking splendid -some of them hundreds of years old. So many varieties and some I’d never seen before — weeping pines and weeping sequoias — really unusual. The Chateau on the estate is now a study center.
I took so many photos — the best way for you to see them is simply a slide show. Enjoy…….

So I decided that I might as well make some use of the cache of UBI’s that apparently I have stored in my brain! What’s a UBI? — Useless Bit of Information. Trivia, I suppose, but most likely nothing that would ever come in useful in normal daily life!! George is always amused by the tidbits that I seem to come up with so why not share some of them that I have discovered since we’ve been here….

There are over 40,000 chateaux in France!! 300 alone in the Loire valley (our route is the Upper Loire). Amazing. We visit two private chateaux regularly. The Chateau de la Bussiere, with its amazing gardens. The Countess de Chasseval still lives there and if you’re lucky you’ll meet her while wandering around the garden. I have never seen so many fruits, vegetables, fruit trees, flowers in a place like this. It’s truly wonderful. There are apple trees that are hundreds of years old and giant quince trees, raspberries the size of golf balls, enormous squash varieties, huge chrysanthemums……it goes on and on. (Think I’ll do a blog just on La Bussiere….).Our other regular visit is St. Fargeau. This is incredible and remarkable that it is still standing. Thanks to the current owner it still exists. He lives in the chateau in an apartment and we get to visit part of his private quarters. The most incredible part of the visit is in the attic. We walk the entire circumference of the chateau in the attic.

There are 450 AOC designations of wines. (Appellation d’Origine Controlee). For a wine to be awarded AOC status it must be produced within the boundaries of that particular designation i.e. Chablis, Cote de Beaune, Sancerre etc. and must be produced to the standards dictated by the AOC board. There are over 50 varieties of grapes grown in France. Some wines are made from only one variety -more common in the north and others are made from blends. The famous Chateuneuf-du-Pape wine can have as many as 13 varieties blended….

There are 365 different cheese -one for every day of the year!!! Cheese, like wines, can be AOC. There are currently 42 French cheeses with AOC status. The most popular cheese in France is Comte, the second most popular is Roquefort. Roquefort was the first cheese to be granted an AOC. There are many stories about cheeses. One of my favorites is about Valencay cheese. It is said that it was originally shaped like a pyramid but on his return from the disastrous campaign in Egypt, Napoleon stopped at the castle of Valencay and saw the cheese which reminded him of Egypt. In a rage he drew his sword and chopped off the top of the cheese!!!! So to this day it is in the shape of a flat-topped pyramid!

There are about 35,000 boulangeries (bakeries)!!! And about 3.7 million tons of bread are consumed each year. We definitely help on board Meanderer. We try to find different breads and pastries every day. It’s not hard!

And then there’s the Poppy….the red poppy, not the other one!! They are found all over France and are one of the most beautiful “wild” flowers. They are cultivated in certain areas but can only be grown in a wild method -in other words they must be allowed to grow in natural meadows with no disturbance or fertilizer. On the one hand they are a delicate plant, affected by farming methods but on the other hand, if left to grow naturally they are amazing with the root lasting up to 25 years and in the course of time producing up to 50,000 blooms. The blooms last one day but appear to last longer because the plant produces a new bloom every day. The fields of poppies in Flanders are known worldwide and the poppy has become a symbol of remembrance of wartime. In our more local area, Nemours is famous for its poppies. There is a fantastic chocolatier – Des Lis Chocolat -and they have been making chocolate flavored with poppies as well as other bonbons, jams and liquers, also made from poppies. We can do visits there for a demonstration and tasting! Yum, yum…

I’ll see what additional UBI’s I can find as we cruise along……….

So we set off for our first week of cruising under a cloud…….yes, the cloud of volcanic ash that paralyzed most of Europe for a while! We were aware of it but were not really paying attention to the news properly since we were working long days to get the boat ready. Chaos everywhere apparently, so we started to watch the news and track what was happening. After our own chaos of preparation work Meanderer was looking bright and shiny and smelling clean and we set off for our first starting point.
I should mention that part of our preparation was to teach Jen how to do the ropes. She’s an amazing student and learned in one day of cruising. Not an easy feat when you realize that you are controlling 270 tonnes coming into a lock!!

We cruised for two days to get there, received an email from a friend on the first day who asked did we think our guests would make it since ALL flights were canceled into and out of Paris!!! So we started to try and get in contact with our expected guests and then heard from them that, although they were already in Europe, they could not get to Paris — or anywhere near so that we could pick them up. We were so sorry to hear that – -and disappointed after working so hard to be ready. You can imagine all the preparation that goes into being ready for guests. but we also imagined their disappointment too – -and knew that they were wondering how and when they could eventually get home…
We didn’t want to waste all the preparation though and it was glorious weather so we told our chef to bring her husband and little boy with her and we would enjoy a leisurely cruise back to Rogny. The calmness of cruising in gorgeous weather made us all feel good. Ollie spent much of the day prepping for the following week while cooking a delicious meal for all of us and we got to enjoy the boat as our guests do — sitting on the deck with a glass of champagne while crossing the famous Pont Canal. It was such a lovely day — J and J – -we are sorry you missed it and we hope that you do make it one day.

The canal seemed especially pretty in the warm weather and the birds and ducks were all doing what birds and ducks do in the spring!! It was not long before we saw our first babies of the season. Too cute.
The fields of yellow rape are glowing, the trees are in bloom -the majestic chestnut trees with their candles of blossoms, the wisteria dripping with color and the lilacs filling the air with their special fragrance. Aaaaaah -lovely.

So then we sat back and watched the volcano news wondering if the second week would be disrupted as well. We received news that our next guests were managing to get to Paris so all would be well. We can only take our hats off to them for spending 40 hours to get from the US to Paris!!! Their story of how they got to us was amazing – -we could only hope that their week on Meanderer would help them recover. So we went about our normal routine of pampering them and Ollie cooked amazing meals, Jen made sure that their every need was met, George piloted Meanderer impeccably through the Canal du Loing (our Northern itinerary) and I took them out exploring beautiful gems of villages. It must all have worked quite well because on Thursday of that week they became engaged. (A first for Meanderer!) They were the only couple on board so it was particularly a romantic week for them — needless to say we had to open more champagne to celebrate! We wish them many years of happiness and love together.

The weather has been so changeable here. The first two weeks of the season were beautiful -warm, sunny and perfect for cruising. Last week started in a very different vein! And of course we had guests on board who are avid walkers and love to enjoy the outdoors….it was cold and windy and dull for the first three days. They bravely got off the boat every day to go on excursions and walk — wrapped in every piece of clothing they could handle. Gosh, it was cold. As I always say -we can control many things but not the weather! In spite of it all though we had fun with them and the end of the week was warm enough for them to eat lunch on deck or enjoy evening cocktails outside or sit and watch the beautiful French countryside go by as we cruised.

The northern route is an interesting week. The canal is wider and deeper than our usual route because of the proximity to the Seine and Paris and therefore commercial traffic. The countryside is equally beautiful and there are some interesting towns and villages that we visited. Samois-sur-Seine where Django Rheinhardt lived, Moret-sur-Loing where Alfred Sisley lived and many other impressionist school painters came to paint, Chateau Landon where there have been people living since the 4th century…….the list goes on.
The market in Chateau Landon is sweet -not very big but some good things nonetheless.

Samois-sur-Seine is simply gorgeous. there is a house that must be one of the most photographed at this time of the year. it has one of the largest, oldest wisteria vines that I’ve ever seen.

And of course there’s Django…

In Ferrieres-en-Gatinais we got to go inside the bell tower of one of the churches. Fascinating and amazing when you realize that it was built in the 12th century and they did not have heavy lifting machinery to get all those huge wooden pillars and beams up there. The roof inside many of these churches resembles an upturned boat hull — because the workers built boats and used the same techniques!! Very cool…

Now we have a little break and we have time to do a few small things on Meanderer. Always something that can be done. It will keep us busy until our next guests arrive……..

The new season is almost upon us. We arrived back from the US to be greeted with almost balmy weather… How nice. Today as I write it is raining and hailing!! Oh well. That too shall pass and we will be able to get everything done so Meanderer looks pretty as she always does. She seems to have weathered the winter rather well — no leaks and not too much that needs to be done on a large scale.
The teak deck is down again after being stored for the winter so Meanderer starts to look as though we really are getting ready. Yesterday (the last really warm and sunny day!) George and I decided to put the green canopy up. Good thing that we checked because as we started to put it on the frame we noticed that a lot of stitching had rotted!!
Remember, click on the photos to enlarge them.

Ah yes, the joys of owning a boat begin again…..That and the fact that the water pump on the bow-thruster seems to have stopped, we are off to a flying start in the repairs department!!! Nothing major though and all will be fixed and operational before our first cruise. Tiresome though.

Clearly it’s spring, whatever today’s weather may be telling us. When we arrived back almost two weeks ago the hedgerows were sad and brown. Thanks to the warm weather and nice sprinkles of rain they are already showing that green haze of leaves budding. The forsythia is in full bloom glowing yellow, and the cherry blossom and apple trees are starting to bloom creating little splashes of color in the mostly still dormant trees. Hard to feel too down with the weather when you see those.

Funny how things strike you sometimes…..in New York we are woken or disturbed by sirens, cars honking, just general cacophony. here we are woken or disturbed by farm tractors driving by or the sounds of sheep in neighbors back yards or cocks crowing!! Funny really how different our two lives are….And both have so much to offer.

We’ve been welcomed back by our friends here. I can tell you that it is all happening in Rogny. We are apparently getting a second bakery in September (you have to remember that this is a Village of 650 people!), a new epicerie is supposed to open and possibly two pizzerias!!!!!!! Wow! Actually, if the pizza is good in either one it will be a nice thing to have in the town. George and I often go to a fantastic restaurant — La Petite Metairie — where we can get really fantastic pizza. It is truly “au milieu de nulle part” (in the middle of nowhere) -a destination spot. They serve other dishes too but the pizza is so good we never eat anything else! When we’ve taken friends there it’s clear that they all wonder where we are going -I mean there is NOTHING else in sight, yet here is this fantastic little restaurant -with an Arizona theme – how funny is that?
We’ll be ramping up our preparations in the next week – first cruise in two weeks. I’ve been busy unpacking new sheets and towels, ordering new bath products, chair cushions — the list goes on. in general making sure that we maintain the standards for which Meanderer is known.

Happy Easter to all. Watch this space…..

The new season will be here before we know it and we all complain that time rushes by relentlessly. Sometimes it’s good to reflect on things past and last season was so much fun for us that I thought I should share some of our high points from 2009.
Certainly it was an easier season for us in terms of us being more familiar with everything about the boat and the route so if things happened differently from how we had planned (OK, went wrong!) we didn’t go into panic and stress overdrive but dealt with it all and I’m sure that our guests barely noticed a hiccup — if at all! Being on a boat, and boat owners will know what I’m talking about, there is always something. It may be the boat itself or it may be an unexpected closure on the canals or at one of our excursion points. In any event – we feel we “roll with the punches” rather well now. This past season we decided to increase our crew from four to five, adding a hostess. That allowed us to have more time to spend with our guests as well as allowing the crew to have time for themselves — a happy crew is a good crew!
We had a few firsts this past season too. We welcomed our first toddler on board! It couldn’t have been a better experience. We were, naturally, concerned on several fronts. Safety first needless to say, possible food issues and so on. Happily he was a wonderful little boy and the whole family made sure that he wore his life-vest all the time when he was on deck. He ate pretty much whatever the adults were served — he will have a very sophisticated palate when he grows up! — and he was generally lovely to have around. It was a very good experience for us. We are now fully equipped should we welcome another toddler on board — crib, car-seat, high-chair, bike seat…………
One of my personal highlights last season was a visit to the Abbaye de Fontenay. We had a group of guests on board who had always wanted to go there and although it is further than we typically drive, we made a day trip out of it. We combined it with a visit to Chablis and had a gourmet picnic lunch high on the hillside above the vineyards. The Abbaye is remarkable. It was founded in 1118 by St. Bernard of Clairvaux, who was the founder of the Cistercian order. The Abbaye church is the oldest Cistercian church remaining in France. UNESCO declared the Abbaye de Fontenay a World Heritage Site in 1981. It is definitely worth the longer day out away from Meanderer. The current owners (yes, it is privately owned!) live on site much of the time — not a bad place to be… I could have taken so many photos. Here is a slide show of just some of them.

As always we have very interesting guests on board. Last season we had a stone mason with us. You can imagine how much he enjoyed all the stonework in the old buildings that are everywhere on our route. The special visit highlight for him was Guedelon. This is a remarkable project being funded by Michel Guyot, who owns the Chateau of St. Fargeau (one of our most popular excursions). He has a passion for “old stones”. He decided that it would be a great project to build a Chateau-fort using the same tolls and methods as would have been used in the 13th Century. The project began in 1997 and is expected to take 25 years to complete!!!!!!! It’s a fabulous visit though. When we told some of the stone-masons at the site that our guest was a kindred spirit he was invited to try his hand at using the tools to shape a huge piece of stone. He has left his mark on this project. It was a special moment for him – -and us. Not only is the actual structure amazing to see but there are lots of animals there too — you know I’m always happy about that! There were some wonderful huge pigs wallowing in mud -they looked so happy.

The Tour de France came through our region with a finish in St. Fargeau. George and I went with friends to watch a piece of the race about 4 kilometers from the finish. Amazing!!! The entire peloton came through at breakneck speed — about 60 mph and you have no idea how close they all are -scary! Blink and you miss them. George kept telling me to look at the camera but I wanted to look for the riders –Armstrong, Contador, Cavendish…… Such fun. Even with the camera on rapid fire it was still tough to get photos! The locals go nuts for the race and get to a watch point hours before the race to watch all the sponsor vehicles and team cars come through. They throw out all kinds of stuff to the crowds — bit like Mardi Gras but it’s water bottles, caps, bags etc. This year we have two stages that we can watch and one is coming right through our home village of Rogny. We have a group coming on board Meanderer who are avid cyclists so they will have a lot of fun watching.
Of course many of the highlights for me personally are all the gorgeous changes in the countryside and towns as the season progresses — the trees changing, the floral displays and so on. Never dull, always beautiful…….The following slide show contains random photos that I just liked! Some of these photos were sent to us by guests -thank you so much for those.
